Feeling random...

Today I found out that my basement was flooded with boiling water from our hot water tank and heard that Ricky Martin has now admitted to being homosexual. Only 1 of these tidbits of information surprised me... guess which one.

Last night I was watching The Daily Show and discovered that even though the USA has a black president, some of it's population still lives in complete ignorance and comes up with the most ridiculous ideas - insert the All American Basketball Alliance, an all-white basketball league for 2nd generation American born citizens only - seriously?!?! SERIOUSLY?!

Have you ever wondered if people who sneeze more often are more blessed than those of us who rarely sneeze? Think about it.

Recipe of the Week: Caribbean Salsa

I don't usually pay attention to recipes that serve as advertisements for certain brands, but this weekend a friend of mine shared a good one from Hunt's - Caribbean Salsa.

We served it with some nachos and it was delicious.

I modified the recipe a tad, so below is my take on the sweet and spicy salsa:

1/2 a can of tomato sauce
1 cup diced bell pepper
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
1/2 a cup of diced pineapple
1/4 cup of diced green onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 tbsp lime juice
1/4 cup of fresh cilantro (you can also use basil or parsley - whatever's your fav!)

Mix all the ingredients together and chill for at least 30 minutes before serving.

I think it would also be tasty served with fish, shrimp or chicken.

Product Pick!

Ever since it hit the Chanel runways in late 09, mint green nail polish has taken off. I wasn't sold at first but just purchased Essie's “Mint Candy Apple”this past week and fell in love. It is so refreshing and cheerful! Perfect way to welcome spring! My next purchase will be their new colour "Tart Decor"!

Technologic

This past weekend my home upgraded from a 32" television born in the 90's to a 52" ULTRAvision (the best TV money could by in 2000) thanks to family friends.

I must admit I was skeptical of the new addition to my family room at first - it IS enormous - however after my eyes adjusted, I started to appreciate it's ultraness!!! While my boyfriend would highlight March madness as his fav viewing experience on the new appliance, I came to love the Ultra while watching The Discovery Channel's "Planet Earth" DVDs and their "Life" series premier on Sunday. There is no way my poor 32 incher could have done them justice.

If you haven't seen the Planet Earth series and missed the Life series premier on Sunday, you need to step up your viewing game immediately! The images of our planet and nature at work are truly stunning and the educational factor is A+.

Annoying Observation of the Week

Douche bag move: wearing your hands free device when you AREN'T driving.

I am in full support of the new laws that force drivers to use a hands free device while driving. If you are texting or talking on your phone when you are driving you are putting so many people at risk. It is such a dangerous and selfish thing to do.

However, as far as I know walking, shopping, eating lunch, sitting on a bench, watching a basketball game etc are instances where you could probably go without the hands free device...because YOU LOOK LIKE A DOUCHE BAG.

Seriously, this phemonenon is everywhere. I see people everyday walking around with these things in their ears, most of who are not even talking to anyone! They are just waiting for that call so they can click the little button on the side of their head.

My message to these people: You are NOT that important. Get over yourself and take that thing out of your ear.

More Best Dressed from the 2010 Oscars

Unfortunately, there weren't as many hits as misses this year on the red carpet. Regardless, I actually have 2 favs - 1 of which some "fashion experts" have picked as their worst - but what do "experts" really know anyway?!

Without further ado (insert drum roll here)...

Pick #2 Agree to Disagree:
Sarah Jessica Parker

Blog meet Gus.

The worlds best dog. He just makes me smile.

Recipe of the Week - Sesame Chicken

I've served this yummy dish with broccoli and bok choy - so delicious!
If you're inviting friends over, pick up some fortune cookies for dessert in China Town (but be warned, they are deadly addictive).

SESAME CHICKEN
(From Martha Stewart - Everyday Food)

Ingredients (serves 4):
3/4 cup brown rice
3 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 garlic clove, finely chopped or crushed with a garlic press
2 large egg whites
1/4 cup cornstarch
1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, cut into 2-inch chunks
Coarse salt and ground pepper
2 tablespoons vegetable oil, such as safflower
4 scallions, thinly sliced
1 1/2 pounds broccoli, cut into large florets, stems peeled and thinly sliced

Directions:
  • Place a steamer basket in a large saucepan, and fill with 1 inch water; set aside for broccoli. Cook rice according to package instructions.
  • Meanwhile, make sauce: In a small bowl, combine honey, sesame seeds, soy sauce, and garlic; set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together egg whites and cornstarch. Add chicken; season with salt and pepper, and toss to coat.
  • In a large nonstick skillet, heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high. Add half the chicken; cook, turning occasionally, until golden and opaque throughout, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a plate; repeat with remaining tablespoon oil and chicken. Return all the chicken to skillet; add reserved sauce and scallions, and toss to coat.
  • Meanwhile, place saucepan with steamer basket over high heat; bring water to a boil. Add broccoli, and cook until crisp-tender, 4 to 6 minutes. Serve sesame chicken with broccoli and rice.
  • Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda Wedding Idea

I loved everything about our wedding day. It was exactly how I (we?) pictured it, even with the rain pouring down!

The one thing I wish I would have included was have a photo booth area. Not an actual photo booth but an area where guests could come and have their photo taken. As a bride or groom it is nearly imposible to get around to talk to everyone at your wedding. This way you have a token of who was there and how they looked on your special day.

All you really need is a backdrop, some props and a photographer willing to stand in one spot and take pictures for a few hours (digital pictures of course).

The outcome would be a collection of funny pictures of your friends and relatives that you could include in an album and possibly even print them off and send in your thank you cards.

This would be a great DIY project or you could leave it to the professions and hire a photography company to set this up!

    Makes me teary every time...

There were so amazing moments at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and we were glued to the television for all 17 days of it.

I'm not going to lie, but I have been known to be quite emotional at times, especially when it comes to inspirational sport stories...

Here is one that seriously got to me:
Charles Hamelin winning the Gold Medal in the Men's Short Track 500m (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uD27S1Ec9mI) and his girlfriend, Marianne St-Gelais' reaction as the race progresses (below). Seriously - my heart melts every time I watch it.

    Cheers to our new blog!

Let's start this blog off right! My favourite way to start things off (well in some cases the only way to start things off) is with a coffee. Whether it's starting the day, a project or a long drive I need a coffee. I have come to feel fairly useless without it and have no desire to ever give up my coffee.

My dependency on coffee poses very few problems in my day to day life. Having said that, the mere process of getting that first coffee into my body is the greatest of challenge of all. Unfortunately, I don't have a coffee IV drip set up in my bedroom therefore, I CONSTANTLY wake up without having coffee in my system (stressssss). If I can pull it together enough to make a coffee before I leave the house I consider this a major success. Otherwise, I need to make a stop asap.

The first coffee shop I pass on the way to work doesn't have drive thru. Some mornings this is an option. Most mornings I can't even consider this.

The second coffee shop I pass doesn't take debit. Really!? It is 2010 people! I have emptied my purse on the passenger seat numerous times searching for enough pennies and nickles to get even the smallest of coffees. I get angry at this point.

Which leads me to my latest discovery....McDonalds coffee.

I'm not sure why I didn't consider this an option before. But at 7am when I caught a glimpse of a giant coffee on an advertisement in front of McDonalds my car just went towards it. Drive thru - check! Debit - check! I don't think I had ever had a coffee from McDonalds before. I have often seen groups of cute old men sitting at McDonalds and solving the worlds problems over coffee, but never really thought of McDonalds as a place to get a good cup of coffee.

Anyway, try it people. You might be surprised :)

    Music makes me happy.

and a kick-ass gem of a video makes me even happier!

Example b) Her Morning Elegance, Oren Lavie

I can't imagine how long it took to make these two beauties, but I like it.
